Car detailing has a language all its own, and it can be genuinely confusing when you’re starting out. Product labels and how-to videos throw around terms like cut and polish, SiO2, IPA wipe-down and LSPas if everyone already knows them. This glossary translates the jargon into plain English — more than forty of the terms you’ll actually run into, grouped by the stage of detailing they belong to. Paint & defects

The vocabulary of what you’re working on — the paint itself — and the flaws detailing exists to fix.

  • Clear coat— the transparent top layer of modern automotive paint, sitting over the colored basecoat. It carries the gloss and takes all the abuse, so nearly everything in detailing — washing, polishing, protecting — is really about caring for the clear coat.
  • Single-stage paint— older paint where the color and gloss are in one layer, with no separate clear coat on top. Found mostly on classic and vintage cars, it behaves differently when polished because you’re cutting into pigmented paint itself.
  • Swirl marks— fine, shallow scratches in the clear coat that look like spider-webbing or a halo under direct light. They’re usually installed by careless washing and drying — dragging grit across the paint — and are the single most common paint defect.
  • Holograms— a specific pattern of fine buffer trails left behind by improper machine polishing, visible as a shimmering, marbled haze in sunlight. They’re corrected with a refining polish pass.
  • Oxidation— the dull, chalky, faded look paint takes on when UV and the elements break down the surface over time. Machine polishing removes the oxidized layer to reveal fresh, glossy paint underneath.
  • Water spots— the ring-shaped marks left when mineral-laden water dries on paint and leaves its deposits behind. Light ones wipe off; etched ones have marked the clear coat and need polishing to remove.
  • Orange peel— a slightly bumpy, dimpled texture in the paint surface that resembles the skin of an orange, usually baked in at the factory during spraying. It’s a texture rather than a contaminant, and leveling it is an advanced correction job.

Washing

The tools and techniques for cleaning paint without scratching it — the foundation every other stage sits on.

  • Two-bucket method— washing with separate wash and rinse buckets so grit rinses off the mitt into the rinse bucket instead of going back onto the paint. It’s the core scratch-free washing technique; our two-bucket wash method guide walks through it.
  • Grit guard— a plastic grate that sits in the bottom of a wash bucket, trapping dislodged grit below it so it can’t swirl back up onto your mitt.
  • pH-neutral— a soap or cleaner balanced to neither acidic nor alkaline, so it cleans without stripping existing wax, sealant or coating. The safe default for regular maintenance washing.
  • Snow foam— a thick layer of foam laid over the car as a pre-wash to soften and lift loose dirt before you touch the paint, reducing the grit you’d otherwise drag around.

  • Foam gun— a simpler foaming tool that runs off a garden hose instead of a pressure washer. It produces thinner foam than a cannon but needs no extra equipment.
  • Wash mitt— a plush microfiber or lambswool glove used to wash the paint. Its deep pile pulls grit away from the surface and holds it, unlike a thin sponge that grinds it back in.
  • Drying towel— a large, thick, highly absorbent microfiber towel made to soak up water without dragging it across the paint, minimizing water spots and marring.
  • Waffle weave— a microfiber weave with a grid-like waffle texture that holds a lot of water, commonly used for drying towels and glass.
  • Quick detailer— a spray-and-wipe product for freshening a lightly dusty car between washes, adding a touch of gloss and slickness without a full wash.
  • Rinseless wash— a product that lets you wash a lightly soiled car with almost no running water, using a highly lubricated solution wiped on and off. Useful where hoses aren’t practical.
  • Waterless wash— a spray-on, wipe-off product that cleans a very lightly dusty car with no rinsing at all. Best reserved for minimal dirt, since there’s no rinse step to carry grit away.

Decontamination

  • Decontamination— the stage between washing and polishing where you remove contaminants bonded into the paint that soap can’t lift. It has two halves: chemical (an iron remover) and mechanical (clay).
  • Clay bar— a pliable bar of detailing clay glided over lubricated paint to physically pull out bonded contaminants — brake dust, rail dust, fallout, overspray, tar and sap — that washing can’t remove, leaving glass-smooth paint. Our best clay bar guide compares the options.
  • Clay mitt— a reusable mitt or pad with a claying-rubber surface that does the same job as a clay bar but covers ground faster and survives being dropped, which a clay bar does not.
  • Iron fallout— tiny embedded metallic particles, largely from brake dust and rail dust, that bond to paint and wheels and corrode over time. A chemical iron remover dissolves them, often turning purple as it reacts.
  • Tar— sticky black road-tar spots that fling up onto lower panels and bond hard. A dedicated tar remover dissolves it so it wipes away without scrubbing.
  • Overspray— a fine layer of stray paint or coating that has landed on and bonded to your car’s surface, typically from nearby painting or road work. Clay and decontamination remove light overspray.

Polishing & correction

  • Paint correction— the process of permanently removing defects — swirls, light scratches, water spots, oxidation — from the clear coat by machine polishing, rather than just hiding them. It restores true clarity and gloss.
  • Cutting / compounding— the aggressive first step of correction, using an abrasive compound to remove a thin layer of clear coat and level out deeper defects. It leaves the paint corrected but slightly hazed, ready for polishing.
  • Polishing— the refining step after cutting, using a finer abrasive to remove the haze the compound left and bring the paint to a clear, high gloss. On lightly marred paint, a polish alone may be enough.
  • DA (dual-action)— a dual-action or random-orbital polisher whose head both spins and oscillates, which makes it far more forgiving and beginner-safe than a rotary. The right first machine for most people; see our best dual-action polisher picks.
  • Rotary— a polisher whose head spins on a single fixed axis. It cuts faster and harder than a DA but generates more heat and is easier to burn paint with, so it’s a tool for experienced hands.
  • Pad priming— working a small amount of product into a fresh polishing pad before you start, so the whole face is evenly loaded and the first pass performs consistently.
  • IPA wipe-down / panel wipe— wiping the paint with diluted isopropyl alcohol (or a dedicated panel-wipe solution) after polishing to strip away polishing oils. This reveals the true corrected finish and gives a coating clean paint to bond to.
  • Hologram removal— a final refining polish pass, usually with a soft pad and fine polish, to erase the buffer-trail holograms that aggressive machine work can leave behind.

Protection

The final layer that seals your work in — the terms around wax, sealant and ceramic coatings. Ceramic coatings, as makers like Gtechniq describe them, are SiO2-based, bond to the clear coat, and act as a hydrophobic, sacrificial layer that lasts multiple years.

  • SiO2— silicon dioxide, the core ingredient in most ceramic coatings. It’s what lets a coating cure into a hard, glass-like, water-repelling layer, which is why coatings are often just called “SiO2 coatings.”
  • Ceramic coating— a liquid SiO2 polymer that chemically bonds to the clear coat and cures into a hard, hydrophobic, sacrificial layer rated to last multiple years. Compare products in our best ceramic coating guide.
  • Graphene coating— a ceramic coating with graphene added to the formula, marketed for extra durability, slickness and reduced water spotting. It’s a variation on the same SiO2 chemistry rather than a wholly different product.
  • Sealant— a synthetic protective product that bonds to the paint and lasts several months — longer than a wax, shorter than a coating. A middle-ground option that’s easy to apply.
  • Carnauba wax— a natural wax from the carnauba palm that gives a warm, deep gloss but lasts only a matter of weeks before it needs reapplying. Prized for its look; see our best car wax picks.
  • Hydrophobic— “water-fearing”: a surface that repels water so it can’t lie flat. Coatings and sealants make paint hydrophobic, which is what produces beading and sheeting.
  • Beading— when water pulls into tight, round droplets on a hydrophobic surface instead of spreading out. Tight, high beads are the classic visual sign a coating or wax is still working.
  • Sheeting— when water runs off a hydrophobic surface in a smooth sheet rather than clinging, taking most of the water — and loose dirt — with it. It makes drying faster and reduces water spotting.
  • High spot— a streak or smear of coating that wasn’t buffed off before it flashed and cured, leaving a raised, hazy mark. Working thin and in small sections prevents them.
  • Curing— the period after applying a coating during which it hardens and reaches full durability. The car must be kept dry through the cure time stated on the product.
  • LSP (last step product)— whatever protective layer goes on last: a wax, sealant or coating. It’s the finishing step that seals in all the work underneath.
  • PPF— paint protection film, a thick, clear urethane film applied to panels for genuine physical protection against rock chips and scratches. Unlike a coating, which is microns thin, PPF is impact protection — a different, thicker product entirely.

What does 'cut and polish' actually mean?

Cutting (also called compounding) uses an abrasive to remove a thin layer of clear coat and level out defects like swirls and scratches. Polishing then refines the finish the cut left behind, restoring clarity and gloss. Together they're the two-step heart of paint correction — cut to remove the defect, polish to perfect the shine.

Is a ceramic coating the same thing as SiO2?

Essentially yes. SiO2 — silicon dioxide — is the core ingredient in most ceramic coatings, which is why they're often just called 'SiO2 coatings.' The coating bonds to the clear coat and cures into a hard, hydrophobic layer. Some products add graphene, but the SiO2 base is what makes it a ceramic coating.

What's the difference between a wax, a sealant and a coating?

They're three levels of protection with rising durability. A carnauba wax gives a warm gloss but lasts weeks; a synthetic sealant bonds to the paint and lasts months; a ceramic coating bonds harder still and lasts years. All three are 'LSPs' — last step products — that go on as the final protective layer.

Why do detailers keep talking about swirl marks and holograms?

Both are fine scratches in the clear coat that show up as haze or spider-webbing under direct light. Swirls usually come from careless washing and drying; holograms are buffer trails left by improper machine polishing.
