How to Apply a Ceramic Coating (Without High Spots)

Applying a ceramic coating at home is absolutely doable, and it saves a lot of money over a professional install — but it’s the one detailing job where rushing genuinely ruins the result. The dreaded outcome is a high spot: a streak of coating that hardened before you leveled it off, leaving a hazy, rainbow-like smear baked into your paint that now has to be polished out. The good news is that high spots are entirely avoidable. They come from three mistakes — working too big an area, working in heat, and not inspecting each section — and this guide is built to prevent all three.
The single most important idea: a coating bonds to whatever is underneath it and it flashes fast. So the job is really two disciplines — meticulous prep so the surface is bare and clean, and patient, small-section application so nothing over-cures before you level it. Do those two things and the coating itself is easy. Skip the prep or rush the application and you’ve sealed in defects or created high spots. Before you start: gather and prep
Set aside a full afternoon and gather everything before you open the coating: a pH-neutral shampoo, a clay bar and iron remover, polish and a dual-action polisherif you’re correcting, an IPA panel-wipe solution, several clean microfiber towels, the coating’s applicator block and suede cloths, and nitrile gloves. Read the coating’s label in full — flash times and cure windows vary by product, and the label always wins over any general advice. Doing the whole car in good, even lighting matters more than most people expect, because you level a coating by seeing the haze, so set up shade with strong, even light before you begin.
The step-by-step
- Wash the car thoroughly. Start from genuinely clean paint. Wash the whole car with a pH-neutral shampoo to strip loose dirt and any old wax or sealant, ideally using the two-bucket method to avoid adding fresh swirls, then rinse and dry completely.
- Decontaminate with clay and an iron remover.Washing leaves bonded contaminants — brake dust, rail dust, fallout, tar and sap — stuck in the paint. Spray on an iron remover, then work a clay bar across the lubricated paint until it feels glass-smooth. The coating can only bond to a truly clean surface.
- Polish and/or do an IPA panel wipe.If the paint has swirls you want gone, polish them out now — you can’t fix them once the coating is on. Then wipe every panel with an IPA-based panel wipe to strip polishing oils and leave the surface bare, dry and ready to bond. After this step, touch nothing with bare hands.
- Work in shade at a moderate temperature, in small sections.Move the car out of direct sun and wind, where heat won’t make the coating flash before you can level it. Mentally divide each panel into small sections roughly two feet by two feet— a door is one or two sections, a hood is several. Small areas are the core defense against high spots.
- Apply a thin cross-hatch coat.Put just a few drops of coating on the applicator — thin coats are the goal, not heavy ones — and lay it onto one small section in a cross-hatch pattern: horizontal passes, then vertical passes over the same area. That overlap makes sure no strip is missed and no area is flooded.
- Let it flash. Wait for the coating to flash— the surface takes on a faint rainbow sheen or light haze — following the flash time on the product label. That’s the signal it’s ready to level. Don’t wander off and let it over-flash past the window.
- Buff off and level before it hardens. With a fresh, clean microfiber, gently buff the section to level the coating — a first pass to remove the bulk, a second flip-side pass to finish. Then inspect the section from several angles under your light to catch any streak or high spot while it can still be leveled. This inspect-every-section habit is what keeps high spots from ever curing in.
- Move on panel by panel.Apply, flash, level, inspect — then move to the next section, and the next panel. Work methodically so nothing you’ve coated over-cures while you’re busy elsewhere. Swap to a fresh microfiber before it gets loaded with product.
- Let it cure and keep it dry. Once the whole car is coated, park it somewhere dry and leave it undisturbed. Keep it completely dry — no rain, no washing— for the full cure window on the label, often around a day or more, with a longer wait (often about a week) before the first proper wash.
The mistakes that cause high spots
Nearly every failed DIY coating traces back to the same handful of errors. Keep these front of mind:
- Too much product, too thick.A coating is meant to go on in a thin, even film. Flood it on and it’s harder to level evenly and far more likely to leave high spots. A few drops per section is plenty.
- Sections too big.Coat half a hood at once and the first corner has hardened before you reach the last. Stay small — two-foot squares — so every area is leveled inside its window.
- Working in heat or sun. Warm panels flash fast and steal your leveling time. Shade and moderate temperature keep the window manageable.
- Letting it over-flash.Level too late and the coating has begun to harden, so it drags and streaks instead of wiping clean. Watch the haze and buff within the label’s window.
- Bad lighting.You can’t level what you can’t see. Strong, even light on each section is how you spot a streak before it cures in.
How to tell the coating has flashed
Leveling at the right moment is the whole game, so learning to read the flash is worth a paragraph on its own. After you lay the coating down, watch the surface under your light. At first it looks wet and even. Within the label’s stated time — often under a minute, sometimes a couple — a faint rainbow sheen or oily hazecreeps across the section. That’s the flash: the solvents are leaving and the coating is starting to set. That haze is your cue to buff.Wipe too early and you’re just smearing wet product around and pulling it thin unevenly; wait too long past the window and it’s begun to harden, so the towel drags and streaks instead of leveling cleanly. Because temperature changes how fast this happens, do a single small test section first and time it, then use that timing as your rhythm for the rest of the car. How much coating, and how many coats
Beginners almost always use too much product. A ceramic coating is meant to go down in an extremely thin, uniform film— a few drops recharged onto the applicator every few passes is plenty for a small section. Flooding it on doesn’t make the protection thicker or better; it just makes the coating harder to level evenly and far more likely to leave high spots and streaks. As for multiple coats: some products allow a second layer after the first has flashed or cured for a set time, and some don’t — this is entirely a label question, so follow the specific product’s instructions rather than assuming more is better. A single, evenly applied and well-leveled coat done right beats two rushed, streaky ones every time. Consistency across the whole car matters more than thickness on any one panel.
The trickier areas: edges, tight panels and glass
Flat panels like doors and the roof are the easy part. The spots that trip people up are the awkward ones, so slow down for these:
- Panel edges and gaps.Coating loves to pool along door edges, badge surrounds and shut lines, where it’s easy to miss when you buff and it cures into a hard line. Apply a little more sparingly right at edges and check them specifically from a low angle when you level.
- Tight, curved and vertical panels. Bumpers, mirrors and pillars flash and drip differently than a flat hood. Do them in even smaller sub-sections so you can keep up with the leveling.
- Glass and trim.Many coatings can go on glass and some plastic trim, but check that your specific product is rated for those surfaces, and keep it off anything it isn’t meant for. On glass especially, high spots show badly against the light, so the same thin-coat, prompt-leveling discipline applies.
If you get a high spot anyway
Even careful people occasionally miss one. Don’t panic. If you catch a high spot while it’s still fresh — within the leveling window — a fresh microfiber and a little gentle work will usually level it out. If it’s partly set but only a few minutes old, some coatings can still be knocked down with a coating-removal or leveling spray on a clean towel; check what the maker recommends. If it has fully cured and hardened in, the fix is mechanical: a light machine polish with a dual-action polisheron that spot to remove the raised coating, followed by a panel wipe and a fresh, careful re-coat of just that area. The coating isn’t truly hardened the moment you finish. Respect the full cure window — dry, no rain, no washing — and treat the first week gently. A note on safety. Ceramic coatings are strong chemicals. Wear nitrile gloves — the product bonds to skin as readily as paint — and work in a well-ventilated space, never a closed garage, because the solvents give off fumes you shouldn’t breathe. Keep the coating off glass, trim and plastics you haven’t prepped, and don’t rush: on the surface it’s essentially one-shot, so a calm, unhurried pace is a safety and quality measure, not just a preference.
