Your wheels take the worst abuse on the whole car. What a coating really does for your wheels

The benefits on wheels are genuine, and arguably more noticeable here than anywhere else on the car, because wheels are so filthy to begin with.

Which wheels can you coat?

Almost any wheel finish can take a ceramic coating, but the finish underneath changes how much the coating helps and how you prep it. The coating bonds to whatever surface is on the wheel, so knowing what you’re working with matters.

  • Clear-coated wheels— the most common factory finish, painted or machined aluminum sealed under a clear layer, much like your body panels. These are the ideal candidate: the coating bonds to the clear coat exactly as it does on paint.
  • Powder-coated and painted wheels— also coat well, since the coating has a solid, sealed surface to bond to. Prep them gently so you don’t leave rub marks.
  • Polished and chrome wheels— bare bright metal with no clear coat. They benefit a lot from a coating because they stain and spot so easily, but they demand careful, gentle prep and a spotless surface first.
  • Damaged or corroded wheels— not ready to coat. Peeling clear coat, active corrosion or curb gouges need to be repaired or refinished first, because a coating locks in whatever is beneath it.

The prep: clean and decontaminated, or don’t bother

Because a coating locks in whatever is beneath it, the wheel has to be genuinely clean and decontaminated first — not just rinsed. How to apply a ceramic coating to your wheels

The application is the same disciplined, work-in-sections routine as coating paint, just on a more awkwardly shaped surface. Do the prep properly, work on cool wheels out of the sun, and take your time.

  1. Remove the wheel or turn it for access.Ideally take each wheel off the car so you can reach the whole face and the full barrel. If you’re leaving them on, turn the steering to full lock to expose the front faces one at a time.
  2. Clean the wheel thoroughly. Wash the face, barrel, spokes and lug areas with a pH-neutral wheel cleaner until every trace of brake dust and old dressing is gone.
  3. Decontaminate with an iron remover. Spray an iron remover over the wheel, let it dwell so it dissolves the embedded metallic dust, then rinse it off completely.
